The Birthday Wish That Came True

The Birthday Wish That Came True

Emma could feel it when she closed her eyes and spoke her wish. Something quite remarkable was going to happen. She wasn’t asking for only another toy or a small gift; it wasn’t just another birthday wish. Emma felt sure her wish would be different this year. She inhaled deeply, closed her eyes tighter than before, and made the most significant wish of her eight years: “I wish for an adventure so amazing that it will change everything!” As the birthday candles flickered.

Though Emma knew deep down that her wish would come true, she didn’t know why or how. She had no idea that her world would be magically inverted, most beautifully by dawn.

Emma had always thought of wishes as having magic. Every year, she would close her eyes tightly and make her wish as the cake was laid on the table with the candles brilliantly shining.

She would say, “I wish for something wonderful to happen this year.” She kept a little secret solely to herself; it was a custom.

But this year was unlike others.

The celebration got underway late afternoon. Emma’s friends smiled perfectly, and laughter and discussion filled the place. Emma’s parents pushed everyone around the table for the critical moment as the candles flickered in the room’s comforting light on a big birthday cake with swirls of pink, purple, and blue pink, purple, and blue frosting.

“Make a wish, Emma!” her mother grinned.

Emma stood facing the cake, and her eyes gleamed. She inhaled deeply, closed her eyes, and considered her wish. It was not just a wish; this year, she yearned for something grand, something akin to an adventure in her life, something everyone would enjoy and perhaps even help to alter the world a small bit.

She exhaled one large puff on the candles.

Emma grinned and let her eyes open as the final flutter of flame vanished. Her want was fulfilled. She was unaware that the magic of her request was more potent than it had been years ago.

Emma woke up the following morning to hear an odd noise outside her window. It was considerably more interesting than the usual birds chattering or the breeze dancing over the trees. Wide-eyed, she shot from her bed towards the window.

And there in the front garden was the most surprising view: A vivid hot air balloon slung from her yard’s oak tree. The early wind gently bobbed the balloon, and its enormous, dazzling rainbow-striped design was clear. Emma cried.

Mom, Dad! You really must see this! She shouted.

Her parents entered the room with wide-open surprise. They hurried outdoors to view the balloon up close.

Her father questioned, “Where did this come from?” scratching his head.

“I… I’m not sure!” Her mother looked just as perplexed and replied, “It must be a mistake.”

Emma, meanwhile, was not that perplexed. She knew one thing very clearly: this was her intended birthday wish. It was a balloon exactly like the one she had had a dream-like vision of the night before. It presented the ideal starting point for a fresh journey.

“Can I ride here?” Emma enquired, her voice bursting with enthusiasm.

Her parents looked at each other dubiously. Though both were slightly concerned about such a vast journey, something about the lovely sensation of the time made them grin.

Her father said, “Let’s see if it’s safe first.”

A friendly voice yelled out from below as they headed towards the balloon.

Good morning! Harold, here is the balloon pilot. As I can see, someone’s birthday wish has come true!

Emma opened her eyes widely. You are the pilot. Do you mean this balloon exists in reality?

Harold laughingly nodded. Indeed, it is! I’m here to ride you. Your longing drove me here. It was powerful. If you want someone else with you, I have room for one or two.

Emma’s heart stuttered. This was her adventure—the one she had yearned for!

Could I bring Ben, my little brother? Looking up at her parents, Emma questioned.

Her parents nodded after grinning at one another.

“Okay, but just once,” her mother said. “Let’s make sure everything is safe, and then we’ll let you start your journey.”

Emma and her younger brother Ben were inside the balloon’s basket shortly poised for takeoff.

Harold, the pilot, gently lowered the lines to let the balloon ascend slowly into the heavens.

Emma’s hair flew in the breeze, the town of Pinehill shrinking under her, and her heart flew with the balloon.

“This is astounding!” Emma yelled to Ben, whose hands were excitedly clapping.

The Earth appeared so different up in the heavens. Emma could see the whole town spreading under them, the far undulating hills, and the glittering river winding like a snake across the terrain. The air was cold; floating felt like magic.

But something unanticipated occurred right when Emma started to unwind and enjoy the journey. The balloon began to veer off track as a tremendous blast of wind tore across the sky.

Harold tried to keep the balloon steady, but before they realized it, they were soaring well above the clouds as the wind grew stronger.

“Oh no, this wasn’t expected!” Harold remarked, his brow wrinkled with anxiety. “We are veering off course!”

Emma felt her heart hammer in her chest. She had no idea where they were going since they were moving further from Pinehill. Emma, though, recalled the sensation she experienced upon making her wish instead of worrying. She had yearned for an adventure, and now it was here. A real, unanticipated journey. She had to be courageous, she realized.

“Don’t concern yourself, Harold!” I find my wish to have magic. We can do this! Emma said, her voice resolute.

Ben gazed up at her, grinned, then squeezed her hand. “Emma, we’ll be good.”

Harold grinned as well. “I believe you could be correct. We only have to think that the winds will carry us where we must go.

Emma’s courage and the magic of her wish enabled the balloon to gently float back towards the earth and settle in a meadow alive with wildflowers. The sun was blazingly brilliant, and the heavens were cloudless. They had arrived somewhere beautiful and quiet.

“Well, that was rather the trip!” Laughing as he pulled them from the basket, Harold said.

Emma turned to survey the meadow, which was bursting with every rainbow hue. Nothing so gorgeous she had ever seen. She had always yearned for this journey, the ideal location to learn and explore fresh ideas.

Emma added, experiencing the moment’s magic; this is precisely where we were meant to be.

Emma realized that her birthday wish had transformed everything as they meandered over the meadow, gathering wildflowers and laughing together. It had set her on an adventure, a road trip, and a lifetime of memories.

More importantly, the request served as a reminder that occasionally, the best experiences begin when one believes in the impossible.
