The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs
Thomas and his wife Eleanor were small farmers living in a little village surrounded by gently sloping hills and fertile meadows. Their little but rich ground area was home to a beautiful cottage with whitewashed walls and a thatched roof.
The couple led a modest existence, observing a few animals that provided both work in their fields and food and company.
Thomas and Eleanor appreciated the small pleasures in life, even if they had little. Working the ground, they loved the sun’s warmth on their faces; every morning, the melodic melodies of birds greeted them, and at night, the calm magnificence of the star-studded heavens. Their ongoing affection for one another strengthened their oneness as they negotiated life together.
One beautiful September morning, Thomas strolled toward the chicken coop to gather eggs for breakfast. The first light of dawn painted the heavens pink and gold. When he arrived at the coop, he was shocked to see a goose among the hens sporting glittering golden feathers. The bird gleamed in the sunlight, radiating cosiness all around.
Come straight now, Eleanor! Thomas screamed out, sounding shocked.
Eleanor hurried to his side, running her hands over her apron. Her eyes widened in wonder at the incredible being right before them.
Marvelling at its brilliant feathers, “Where did this goose come from?” she inquired.
With a head scratch, Thomas said, “I have no idea.” “But it seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.”
The couple chose to look after the goose, giving it a cozy nest and food. Inspired by the Latin term for “golden,” a suitable homage to her brilliant looks, they called her Aurelia.
Thomas and Eleanor were met with quite a surprise that morning. Tucked up in Aurelia’s nest was one shining golden egg. Its shiny, flawless surface mirrored the sunlight through the coop’s window.
Is this actual gold? Whispering, Eleanor hardly believed her eyes.
Thomas grabbed the egg, felt its weight, and then attentively inspected it. “It appears so,” he answered, amazement evident.
Overwhelmed with enthusiasm, they decided to see the town blacksmith, a man recognized for his metal knowledge. The blacksmith verified their doubts; the egg was composed of pure gold.
The hamlet soon had word of the fantastic goose, and people from surrounding towns soon arrived to see the wonder. Every day, Aurelia still laid one golden egg, and Thomas and Eleanor’s meagre resources started to change. Their newly acquired riches helped them upgrade their cottage, tend their farm, and invest in better seeds and tools. They stayed rooted, distributing their benefits to their neighbours and helping their community to flourish even as their wealth grew.
But with time, Thomas’s heart started to grow the seed of greed. Once a sign of amazement and thankfulness, the daily golden egg began to seem inadequate. He started to think of their great fortune and wondered if they could access all the riches at once.
Thomas told Eleanor one evening, as they sat by the hearth, his ideas.
“Imagine, my dear, if we could grab all the gold inside Aurelia at once,” he said. “We might be the richest people in the area, maybe the whole nation.”
Eleanor wrinkled, worry written on her face. “Thomas, Aurelia has been a gift to us, though. Shouldn’t we be happy with the wealth she has already blessed our lives?
Thomas groaned; the seduction of unspoken wealth distorted his judgment. “While I can see your concern, Eleanor, consider the opportunities. We could guarantee a decent future for the next generations and ourselves.
Eleanor harbours doubts, but Thomas’s fixation on the concept gets more intense. He persuaded himself that the possible benefits exceeded the hazards. Driven by ravenous avarice, one fatal morning, he chose to follow his scheme.
Thomas went to Aurelia, who met him in her usual kind manner, heartbroken and hands shaking. Whispering thanks and apologies, he quickly took her life. Eleanor watched in horror as he gently opened the goose, searching for a wealth of golden eggs.
Nevertheless, there was nothing.
Inside, Aurelia was no different than any other regular goose. The awareness of their foolishness hit them like a thunderbolt. They had undermined the fundamental source of their riches in their quest for more wealth.
Tears extending in her eyes, Eleanor accepted Aurelia’s decaying body. Her voice plunging with loss, “Oh, Thomas,” she broke down, “what have we caused?”
Thomas went to his knees and buried his face in his arms.
His voice shook with remorse; he said, “I’ve let my greed blind me to the blessings we already have.”
The weight of their deeds was closely followed in the following days. The golden eggs were no more, and the once-active farm felt desolate without Aurelia. Once revered by the people, the villages now saw them with sympathy and grief.
One evening, as the sun travelled below the equator, Thomas and Eleanor sat mutely on their front porch, and the crops glowed in a warm golden glow. Chirping bugs reflecting their inner battle developed an emotional tune in the air.
Eleanor broke the silence and said gently, “Perhaps this is a lesson we should have learnt: to value what we have and realize that avarice could have terrible results.”
Tears shining in his eyes, Thomas nodded. “We will treasure every gift from today forward, no matter how little. We will share what we have and remember that thankfulness and satisfaction define real wealth rather than riches measured in gold.”
Thus behaved. Thomas and Eleanor became shining lights of kindness in their community by sharing their harvests, helping neighbours, and imparting lessons on patience and gratitude. Their narrative became a tale handed down through the years, teaching everyone who listened of the dangers of avarice and the incredible richness of a thanksgiving heart.
