Nate the Great

Nate the Great

A young investigator called Nate the Great lived in the tranquil, peaceful hamlet of Oakville. Nate was not your typical youngster. Nate spent his days answering riddles while most children preferred to play tag or ride bikes. Sludge, his faithful dog, and his reliable magnifying glass let Nate crack any case, big or small.

Nate sat at his kitchen table one beautiful morning, enjoying his preferred peanut butter sandwich breakfast. The phone rang just as he was ready to bite broadly.

In his most sobering voice, “Hello, Nate the Great, detective extraordinaire speaking!” he said.

From the other end, a familiar voice answered, “Nate!” Annie was his friend, the finest one. “I need your help!”

“What’s the mystery, Annie??” Nate asked, seated in his chair, straightforwardly.

“It’s my photo here. I search everywhere but cannot find it. Annie said, sounding concerned. “I drew it for hours, then it disappeared. My finest picture ever!

Nate answered without thinking twice. “Don’t concern Annie.” I’ll find your picture. I am on the case right now!

Nate set aside his food, reached for his magnifying glass, and summoned Sludge. They hurried across to Annie’s house together. When Nate showed up there, Annie was pacing in front of her front door.

Hi, Nate! She said to him. “I’m so happy you’re here. I was in my room doodling a unicorn when it vanished!

“Um… that sounds like a mystery to me!” Nate remarked. “Let’s first search for hints.”

Examining every room, Nate and Annie strolled about the house. They turned behind the bookcases, under the couch, and into the laundry basket. Sludge sniffed about, but he appeared to find no need for it.

“Let’s check your room once more,” Nate said. “Perhaps we missed something.”

Nate looked around carefully in Annie’s room. At that, he noticed something odd on the floor.

“Look, Annie!!” Nate said, pointing to a brilliant green pencil. “This belongs nowhere on the floor. This is a clue!

Annie dropped down to grab it. “That’s my favorite pencil! I usually use it while I draw!”

“Well, this pencil could have fallen from your desk. Let’s keep it with us and keep hunting for further clues.”

Nate lacked the readiness to give up. Sludge, and he kept looking about the room. Suddenly, Nate noticed something shiny in the corner of the room.

“Another clue!” Picking up a tiny, glittering sticker, Nate yelled.

“Hmm… I remember using those stickers on the edges of my picture, looking reflective,” Annie commented. Still, why would a sticker end up on the floor?

Though we’re getting closer, Nate said, “I’m not sure.” Let us follow the hints to find where they lead.

Outside into the backyard, Nate and Annie headed. Sludge sniffed around and let out excited barking. Looking down at the ground, Nate noticed something quite fascinating.

“Glitter! Look, Annie, there’s a trail of glitter leading to the side yard!” Nate said, pointing to the gleaming path.

Annie looked wider. “I had no idea my backyard sparkled.”

Nate dropped down to study the path. Grinning, he continued, “It’s like a treasure hunt.” “Let’s pursue it.”

The sparkle finally brought them to a little garden close to the fence. Max sat down to find something quite unusual.

Annie’s missing photo lay under a shrub at the bottom of the garden. As she had indicated, it was a lovely unicorn sketch.

“I found it!” said Nate while waving the image. “Annie, it wasn’t taken from you. It was merely sheltering under this bush.

Annie gave a startled sigh of relief. “In what manner did it arrive? I do not recall leaving it outside.

“Well,” Nate responded, “maybe it dropped off your desk, and the wind carried it outside. The sticker and the glitter have to have come from your sketch supplies.

Annie grinned and glanced at Nate. “Thank you, Nate the Great! The greatest detective ever is you!

Max gave Sludge, his dog, a pat and grinned. “Every clue counts, Annie,” he advised. “Sometimes the most important revelations come from the smallest details.”

Thank you, Nate! Annie hugged him firmly and advised him to be more careful with his image the next time.

Nate considered the need to constantly search for hints as he and Sludge got home. Sometimes, solving a problem requires paying attention to every last detail rather than only determining the largest answer.
